Does your old attic insulation need to come out?

Insulation removal in Santa Barbara clears old insulation out of your attic so the space can be insulated again, and it should come out once moisture, mold, fire or pests have damaged it.

Most calls start with a brown stain on a ceiling, a smell in the room over the garage or droppings by the attic hatch, and by the time anyone looks, the insulation up there is soaked, matted or fouled. The cost turns on how big your attic is and on the type, amount and condition of what's in it. The schedule turns on the same things, and on whatever has to be fixed first, like the roof leak that started it, because new insulation laid over a leak just has to come back out. After I've seen your attic, the written plan gives you your own figure and the order the work goes in.

How can you tell old insulation has gone bad?

  • Stains on the ceiling

A brown ring or bubbling paint under the attic usually means a roof leak has soaked the insulation above it. Wet fill packs down and holds damp against the wood, so the longer it sits, the more likely you're dealing with mold and not just a wet patch.

  • Droppings or a musty smell

Droppings near the hatch, chewed paper facing or a stale smell drifting into the rooms upstairs usually means rodents have been nesting in the insulation. New insulation on top won't fix that, and the mess spreads further every month it's left.

  • Flat, thin or scorched fill

Insulation that's packed flat, blackened near an old fire or thin in patches has stopped slowing heat, which is often why it's hot upstairs. Topping it up only hides the damage, so it's worth finding out why it went flat before anything else.

  • Crawl space insulation

Pests and damp that reach the attic often find their way under the floor too, where they spoil the insulation between the joists the same way.

  • Wall insulation

Older houses with cold floors and drafty rooms often have walls that were never insulated at all, and that's easier to sort out while the attic is already open.

How we handle insulation removal

Most removal jobs start with insulation spoiled by a roof leak or pests, so we find what caused it before anything comes out, and the leak or the way in gets fixed first. If the old fill could be vermiculite, we stop and have it tested, and any asbestos work goes to a separate abatement firm instead of our crew. Once the attic is cleared for removal, we cover the path from your door to the hatch, take the old insulation out, clean the attic floor and make sure the eave vents along the edges are open, so the attic can breathe once it's insulated again.

Most people put new insulation back once the attic is clear, and before it goes in we seal the gaps around pipes, wires, can lights and the hatch so it isn't fighting a draft. If droppings or damp got under the house, we can look at your crawl space insulation on the same visit, and in an older house it's a good time to ask about wall insulation for the rooms below.

  • Refill with blown-in insulation

Blown-in, which is loose fill blown through a hose, suits most attics once the gaps are sealed, and we spread it evenly out to the edges instead of piling it in the middle. For most homes it's the better value, and it's what I usually recommend.

  • Refill with spray foam

Spray foam costs more, but it seals air while it insulates, so it earns its price when your ductwork runs through the attic. If your ducts live up there, I'll walk you through both before you decide.

Why Santa Barbara homeowners call Santa Barbara Insulation & Spray Foam for removal

  • I do the first look myself

I come out for the first look and the estimate, and I'm the one who comes back at the end. You deal with one person who knows your attic from the first visit to the last.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured for the work we take on. Asbestos isn't part of that, so if a test finds it, a separate abatement firm handles it and we pick up once they're done.

  • In business since 2017

We're based in Santa Barbara and work across Goleta, Montecito, Carpinteria, Isla Vista and Ventura. Most of our calls there are drafty rooms and tired old attics, so a spoiled attic is familiar ground for us.

On a removal job, what matters is dealing with whatever spoiled the old insulation before anything new goes in. When you're ready, reach us through the contact page and we'll set up a time.

What happens after you call about insulation removal

  1. Call or send the form

You reach us by phone or the form, and we set a time for me to come see the attic. We're open seven days a week into the evening, so it's usually easy to find a time that suits you.

  2. I look at your attic

I find what spoiled the insulation, note what has to be fixed first and arrange a test if the fill looks like vermiculite. You get a written plan with the order of the work and the price, so you know the number before anything is booked.

  3. We handle permits and booking

Before we book, we check which office covers your address, whether that's the City of Santa Barbara, the county or the university, since the city issues building permits for work that repairs, replaces or alters a building. If your job needs one, we apply, set up the inspections and book the removal after any repairs it depends on.

  4. Removal and the walk-through

Our installers clear the old insulation, clean the attic and put in any new insulation the plan calls for. Then we walk the finished attic with you.

Common questions

  • How much does attic insulation removal cost in Santa Barbara?

Removing old attic insulation usually costs about $1 to $2 per square foot across the US, and that's the going rate for the work, not our price. Insulation that's soaked or full of droppings costs more per square foot to clear than clean blown-in fill. Your own figure comes from the written plan after I've seen the attic.

  • How long does insulation removal take?

It can take anywhere from about 4 hours to 2 days or more, depending on how big the attic is and how complicated the job is. It's worth planning attic access and your household's routine around that window, and I'll tell you where your job falls when I write the plan.

  • What should I do if my attic has vermiculite insulation?

Don't pull it out yourself, because EPA guidance is to hire a professional asbestos contractor for any work that would disturb it. Vermiculite looks like small pebbles poured between the joists, usually gray-brown or silver-gold. If I see fill like that, we stop and have it tested before anything else happens.

  • Who can remove asbestos insulation in California?

For 100 square feet or more of asbestos-containing material, California requires a contractor with the state's asbestos abatement classification or one whose license qualifier has passed an asbestos certification exam, and the contractor has to be registered with the state for that work. EPA adds that the remover should be a trained, accredited abatement firm separate from whoever assessed the insulation, so the remover has no stake in the test result. That's why asbestos work at your house goes to a separate firm, not our crew.

  • Can you put new insulation over old attic insulation?

Yes, if the old layer is dry, clean and undamaged, but not over insulation that's been soaked or fouled by pests. New material laid on spoiled fill keeps the problem in your attic, so that layer comes out first. I'll tell you which you've got when I look.

  • How do I compare insulation removal quotes?

Ask each contractor to price air sealing, which closes the gaps before new insulation goes in, and the treatment of the attic floor as separate lines, because that's where quotes on a fouled attic most often differ. Then you're comparing the same work and not just a bottom number.
